How to Start a Solar Business in India – Become a Servotech Solar Distributor/Dealer

Diving into the solar energy business in India can be rewarding given the nation’s increasing emphasis on renewable energy. As the world moves towards sustainable practices, India stands at the forefront, promoting solar power as a key element in its energy mix. Initiatives like the National Solar Mission and various subsidy programs have created fertile ground for entrepreneurs and businesses seeking to thrive in the solar energy sector. If you’re planning to start your solar energy business, here’s a blog on how you can kickstart and flourish in the solar energy business landscape in India.

Understanding the Solar Business

A solar business is a business enterprise or industry related to solar energy, particularly the design, manufacturing, installation, maintenance, and distribution of solar power systems and related products. This includes solar panel manufacturing, solar installation services, solar energy project development, solar component distribution, and solar technology research and development.

Starting a Solar Business in India

Starting a solar business in India is easier than you think and involves certain key steps.

1) Business plan- Start by creating a detailed business plan outlining your goals, target market, and products or services. Consider whether you want to focus on solar panel manufacturing, installation, project development, or other solar-related activities.

2) Register Your Business- Once you have decided what type of solar business you want to do, the next step is to register your business. You can register your business as a legal entity, such as a sole proprietorship, partnership, limited liability partnership (LLP), private limited company, or public limited company, depending on the scale and structure of your business.

3) Location-  It is important to choose your location wisely, whether it is a manufacturing facility, office, or installation service center, keeping in mind the needs and requirements of your business.

4) Financing – Solar Businesses often require a significant initial investment. Hence it is important to secure the necessary funding which may include personal savings, loans, grants, or investments.

5) Market and Branding-  develop a strong brand presence and marketing strategy to promote your solar business and watch your business skyrocket.

6) Maintaining Compliance- Lastly, ensure full compliance with regulatory requirements, certifications, and quality standards for your solar business. Establish reliable supplier relationships, stay updated on government incentives and guidelines from organisations like MNRE and NISE, and prioritize product and service quality to enhance your reputation and customer satisfaction.

Become a Solar Distributor

In the solar industry, a solar distributorship model involves a company or individual purchasing solar products in bulk from manufacturers and subsequently distributing them to retailers, installers, or end-users. Serving as a vital link in the solar supply chain, distributors facilitate the seamless flow of solar products from production lines to consumers. They manage logistics, including transportation and storage, and often offer essential services like training and technical support. By ensuring the widespread availability of solar products, these distributorships play a pivotal role in advancing solar energy adoption across diverse regions.

These dealerships act as intermediaries between solar manufacturers and end consumers, providing solar panels, inverters, batteries, and other components necessary for solar energy systems. They may offer consultation services, assess the energy needs of customers, and provide solutions tailored to their requirements. Solar dealerships play a crucial role in promoting the adoption of solar technology by making products accessible to individuals, businesses, and communities interested in harnessing solar energy.

India’s EV Battery Industry: Growth, Challenges, and Government Initiatives

In recent years, India’s electric vehicle (EV) industry has witnessed a significant surge in momentum, fueled by a global shift towards sustainable transportation solutions. Central to the success and sustainability of this sector is the growth of the EV battery industry and EV battery, a critical component that directly impacts the performance, range, and overall viability of electric vehicles. As the nation strives to address environmental concerns, reduce dependency on conventional fuel sources, and embrace a cleaner, greener future, the EV battery industry has emerged as a focal point for innovation and investment. However, this growth is not without its set of challenges, ranging from technological hurdles to infrastructural limitations. Against this backdrop, various government initiatives play a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of India’s EV battery sector, steering the nation towards a more sustainable and electrified future. This blog focuses on the dynamic landscape of India’s EV battery industry, exploring its growth trajectory, the challenges it confronts, and the strategic initiatives undertaken by the government to propel this transformative journey.

Factors Driving the Demand for Batteries in India

The increasing demand for electric vehicles across passenger and commercial segments is one of the primary factors that is responsible for driving demand for batteries in India. Homes are also becoming smarter and using different types of electronic devices to complete routine tasks. The usage of electronic devices at home has increased the demand for the required power supply and the existing capacity of grid supply is not enough to meet this demand. Shortage of the required grid supply also proves an important driving factor for increasing demand for batteries. Besides, Central and State Govts. are continuously taking big initiatives to accelerate rapid urbanization and industrialization to contribute to the economy which leads to increased demand for electricity. Batteries, especially in the form of backup power solutions, in rural areas with limited or unreliable access to the electricity grid, and urban, and industrial settings, are essential to ensure uninterrupted power supply. Batteries prove good off-grid solutions when grid supply is not available. The telecommunication infrastructure is another domain that essentially requires high-capacity batteries to ensure smooth connectivity in remote areas. The power sector currently produces insufficient energy and it requires huge improvement to successfully overcome the considerable issues of unstable power infrastructure. High capacity Energy Storage Solutions appear to be a feasible amenity to bring positive change in the energy sector but they also need batteries to keep ESS functioning and deliver expected results. Above-listed factors are significantly driving the demand for batteries in India.

    Opportunities and Challenges

The adoption of EVs is continuously increasing and electric vehicles are penetrating the market with higher sales. They require lithium-ion batteries in huge amounts. Consistently growing sales of EVs also increase the demand for lithium-ion batteries because they are the main components in electric vehicles. These numbers will increase more in the coming years to touch new limits. Lithium-ion batteries also help as an emergency power backup system at home, workplace, and C&I. These batteries additionally play a key role in increasing the capacity of the power backup system and provide enlarged backup time. These consistently growing demands provide huge opportunities for all lithium-ion battery manufacturers. When combined with meticulous planning and feasible strategies lithium-ion battery manufacturers can reap great benefits from this opportunity to lead in the market. This is undoubtedly a golden opportunity to grow in terms of revenue and growth, however, there are some significant challenges as well which prove big constraints to meet the targets and require urgent attention. The battery manufacturing sector is very big, not only in India but across the world, and is currently incapable of meeting the constantly increasing demands in the market. The shortage of key raw materials like lithium, cobalt, etc. is the main reason behind the limited manufacturing of batteries. Importing these raw materials from foreign countries is the only feasible solution to overcome this shortage with China being reportedly the biggest supplier of lithium, cobalt, and other raw materials. Expensive import, and stipulated rules & regulations are other challenges in the way of manufacturing lithium batteries in the required quantity and ensuring smooth supply to the end-user. Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited (MECL) however has found some lithium reserves in India at J&K and Rajasthan locations but exploration and processing of lithium is still a work in progress and require some time. Expensive manufacturing techniques, the fragile ecosystem around the reserves, and other important environmental challenges act as a barrier to moving further. In these scenarios, effective government policies become imperative in order to enable the start of lithium mining to ensure easy availability of raw lithium at a reduced price and cut dependency on foreign exports.

Government’s Initiatives in Creating a Sustainable EV Battery Ecosystem

Over the last few years, the government has introduced policies, and regulatory support along with the required framework for the development of the amicable EV ecosystem in the country. FAME II scheme delivered good results in the last few years and now the ACC (Advanced Chemistry Cell) PLI scheme is expected to help the nation save millions against the import of crude oil and enhance the share of renewable energy at the national grid level. This government initiative also emphasizes optimizing domestic value addition and making India globally competitive as far as battery manufacturing capabilities are concerned. As per the guidelines of the ACC PLI program, manufacturers essentially have to set up the manufacturing facility within a period of a maximum of two years after getting the approval and the applicable incentives will be disbursed later after continuously selling batteries that are manufactured indigenously. The disbursal time may span up to a period of over five years or even more. These guidelines clearly demonstrate the government’s determination to create a world-class EV ecosystem in the country as soon as possible. The provision of disbursing incentives on the basis of continuous selling of batteries will also give confidence to manufacturers to successfully run their battery manufacturing units for a long time and receive government support to escape all roadblocks.

    Way Ahead

Servotech is already a renowned brand in the EV charger manufacturing industry and has secured a respected place in the list of most competent manufacturers. In order to enhance our manufacturing capabilities, we have established our subsidiary Techbec Green Energy Private Limited. We have also signed an MoU with GoUP, in line with Uttar Pradesh Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Mobility Policy 2022, to set up an EV charger manufacturing unit. Everything you need to know about Solar Panel Subsidy in India 2024

Solar energy is a popular green energy source that is powering homes, businesses, industries, and farmhouses. Thanks to its high renewable capacity, more and more consumers are turning towards solar energy to reduce grid dependence and cut monthly power expenses. The government of India is providing subsidy aid to encourage the use of solar systems for residential power needs. Everyone from small houses and large buildings to institutions and other large-scale cooperative housing complexes can benefit from solar subsidies in India. The subsidy scheme intends to reduce solar panel prices all over India for the housing sector. This blog will tell you everything you need to know about the solar subsidy.

    Solar Subsidy in India

The solar panel subsidy program in India aims to encourage residential solar energy usage by offering financial assistance. The Central Financial Assistance (CFA) is provided by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) for rooftop solar systems (RTS), facilitated through DISCOMs and state agencies. The CFA is directly transferred to consumers’ bank accounts.

The subsidy amounts vary based on system capacity and location. For most regions, solar energy systems up to 3 kW receive a subsidy of up to ₹14,588/kW. Systems ranging from 3 kW to 10 kW get ₹14,588/kW for the initial 3 kW and ₹7,294/kW for the rest. Beyond 10 kW, a fixed amount of ₹94,822 is provided.

In specific areas like northeastern states and challenging terrains (Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, UT of Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Lakshadweep, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands), slightly higher CFAs are applicable. For instance, households with up to 3 kW capacity receive ₹17,662/kW, and for capacities between 3 kW to 10 kW, it’s ₹17,662/kW for the first 3 kW and ₹8,831/kW for the remaining capacity. Above 10 kW, a fixed amount of ₹1,14,803 is given.

Furthermore, Resident Welfare Associations/Group Housing Societies (RWA/GHS) can benefit from ₹7,294/kW for capacities up to 500 kW @ 10 kW per house in standard areas, while in hilly regions, it’s ₹8,831/kW for the same capacity.

It’s important to note that the CFA is calculated based on either the module capacity or the inverter capacity, whichever is lower. Additionally, certain states like Jammu and Kerala offer separate state-specific solar subsidies in addition to the CFA to promote clean energy adoption.

Why does the Government give Solar Subsidy?

Governments offer subsidies for solar power primarily to promote the adoption of renewable energy sources like solar and achieve various economic, environmental, and social objectives:

    I) Reducing Dependence on Fossil Fuels: By incentivizing solar power, governments aim to decrease reliance on non-renewable energy sources like coal, oil, and natural gas, thus enhancing energy security and reducing import dependence.

II) Stimulating Economic Growth: Supporting the solar industry can stimulate economic growth by creating jobs in manufacturing, installation, maintenance, and research and development related to solar technologies.

III) Energy Affordability and Access: Subsidies make solar energy more affordable for consumers, allowing them to adopt cleaner energy sources while potentially lowering their electricity bills. This is beneficial for rural or marginalized communities that may lack access to power grids.

IV) Technological Advancements: Subsidies encourage research and development in solar technologies, fostering innovation and driving down the cost of solar panels and associated equipment.

    V) Meeting Renewable Energy Targets: Many governments set renewable energy targets or commitments to increase the share of renewable energy in their overall energy mix. Subsidies for solar power help in meeting these targets by incentivizing its adoption.

    Benefits of Solar Subsidy

    1. Encouraging Renewable Energy Adoption: Solar subsidies incentivize individuals, businesses, and communities to invest in solar power systems. This leads to increased adoption of solar energy, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and promoting a transition toward cleaner and renewable energy sources.

    2. Cost Reduction for Consumers: Subsidies lower the upfront costs of installing solar panels and associated equipment for consumers. This makes solar power more affordable and accessible to a wider range of people, encouraging them to invest in solar energy systems for their homes or businesses.

    3. Energy Cost Savings: Solar subsidies help consumers save on their electricity bills by generating their own electricity from solar panels. Over time, this can lead to significant savings on energy costs, especially in regions with ample sunlight and favorable solar conditions.

    4. Environmental Benefits: Increased use of solar energy reduces greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution associated with traditional energy sources like coal or natural gas. Solar power generation produces clean energy without emitting carbon dioxide or other harmful pollutants, contributing to a healthier environment and mitigating climate change impacts.

    5. Energy Independence and Security: By diversifying the energy mix and promoting local electricity generation through solar power, subsidies contribute to greater energy independence for regions or countries, reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels.

How to Apply for Solar Panel Subsidy in India

Recently, the government launched the National Portal for Rooftop Solar, to make the process for applying for solar much simpler. Now, consumers nationwide can easily apply for solar panel subsidies online and track their application’s progress until the subsidy is transferred to their bank account.

To qualify for the subsidy, specific criteria must be met:

    1) Ensure that the entire solar project is implemented through the national portal. The application to the technical feasibility check to installation- every stage must be undertaken based on the portal procedure.

    2) Consumers have to get their system installed through empaneled vendors (The list of state-wise registered vendors is available on the portal).

    3) Only domestically manufactured solar panels (both module and cells) can be used.

    4) Compliance with all MNRE guidelines and technical specifications is mandatory.

    Steps to Avail the Subsidy

    1. Register and submit your application at solarrooftop.gov.in. No vendor or third party is allowed to do so on the beneficiary’s behalf.
    2. The DISCOM will conduct a technical feasibility study within the next 15 days.
    3. Once approved, you can install the system through registered vendors.
    4. After installation, you can apply for net metering and the request will be forwarded to the DISCOM.
    5. There will be an inspection of the plant and if all guidelines are met, a commissioning certificate will be issued.
    6. Once you submit your bank details in the portal, the funds will be credited to your account in 30 days.

Everything You Need to Know about Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) Technology

Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology marks a transformative phase in the convergence of Electric Vehicles and power grids. This innovative system allows electric vehicles to not only draw energy from the grid for charging but also to feed stored energy in vehicle batteries back into the grid when needed. V2G, often associated with bidirectional charging, creates a dynamic interplay where EVs act as a distributed energy resource, benefiting both grid stability and electric vehicle owners. This article provides a comprehensive overview of V2G technology, encompassing its functionalities, benefits, applications, global adoption status, challenges, and India’s readiness for its integration into the energy landscape.

    What is Vehicle-to-grid Technology?

The vehicle-to-grid or V2G is a technology that involves EVs supplying electricity back to the power grid to meet the energy demands in peak hours. V2G technology powers bi-directional charging which makes it possible to charge the EV battery and take the energy stored in the battery of the EV and push it back to the power grid. While bi-directional charging and V2G are often used synonymously, there is a slight difference between the two. While bi-directional charging means two-way charging (charging and discharging), V2G technology only enables the flow of the energy from the car’s battery back to the grid.

    Benefits of V2G Technology

    i) Virtual Power Plant: V2G technology synchronizes thousands of EVs, acting as a decentralized energy system. It supplies power during peak demand, charges during low demand, and balances the grid. This orchestration is known as a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). Unlike traditional power plants, VPPs use cloud-based software to control thousands of battery systems to create a virtual large-scale generator or storage system and to combine various energy resources like solar panels, batteries, and EVs.

ii) Grid Stabilization: V2G facilitates bidirectional energy flow, allowing electric vehicles to supply stored energy back to the grid when needed. This capability helps stabilize the grid by balancing supply and demand fluctuations, especially during peak hours or in emergencies.

iii) Voltage Support: EVs equipped with V2G capability can provide voltage support to the grid, ensuring consistent and stable voltage levels.

iv) Backup Power: Bidirectional EV Chargers used to enable V2G are not only used to provide grid support. These powerful devices contain power inverters, and most new bidirectional chargers can also enable backup power in the event of a blackout or emergency. However, for a bidirectional inverter to power a house independently of the grid, it must first be isolated from the grid network, known as islanding.

    v) Integration of Renewable Energy: V2G enables the integration of renewable energy sources into the grid. EVs can store excess energy generated from renewable sources like solar or wind power and supply it when needed, supporting a cleaner and more sustainable energy mix and reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing environmental sustainability.

    How does Vehicle-to-grid Technology Work?

    V2G Working

V2G technology enables EVs to communicate with the grid to either draw electricity for charging or discharge excess energy back into the grid. During peak demand, these vehicles can supply stored energy, acting as a decentralized power source. Conversely, during off-peak hours, they charge when electricity is abundant. Implementing V2G technology requires the usage of smart technology, enabling an electric vehicle to sync with the electricity grid and inject power into the grid using a specialized bidirectional charger. These advanced devices, equipped with power converters, can either charge the EV’s battery or send power back to the grid as per instructions. Approval from the grid operator is essential to connect a bidirectional charger to an EV for supplying power to the grid. Remote management by the grid operator, controlling the injected energy, is facilitated through a Virtual Power Plant program (VPP).

    Applications of V2G Technology

    1) Electric Vehicle Fleet Management: Businesses manage EV fleets efficiently by using V2G to schedule charging/discharging, reduce operational costs, and support sustainability initiatives.

    2) Grid Ancillary Services: V2G technology supports grid ancillary services like voltage control, reactive power support, and grid reliability enhancement.

    3) Smart Home Integration: EVs with V2G capability can power homes during peak hours, reducing household electricity costs and supporting residential energy management.

    4) Intelligent Energy Trading: V2G facilitates energy trading between EVs and the grid or other EVs, fostering a dynamic market for energy exchange.

How Can V2G Become Mainstream for EV Adoption?

Establishing standardized protocols and regulatory support is fundamental to propelling V2G technology into the mainstream. These efforts ensure interoperability among diverse vehicles, and charging infrastructure, and incentivize V2G integration through clear tariff structures and grid access regulations. Scaling up of V2G-compatible charging infrastructure across homes, public spaces, and workplaces, simplifies V2G participation for EV owners. Collaborations among stakeholders foster technological advancement, while large-scale demonstration projects showcase V2G advantages, fostering wider adoption. Continuous Research and Development remain pivotal in refining V2G technology, optimizing energy management, and ensuring grid stability for its mainstream assimilation.

Is India Ready for Vehicle to Grid?

V2G is pivotal for India’s energy grid. India’s renewable energy capacity is set to grow to 500 GW by 2030, Over the same period, about 40% of new vehicle sales in India are expected to be EVs. Notably, segments like two/three e-wheelers may witness over 75% EV adoption, highlighting the substantial opportunity to utilize EV batteries in advancing V2G technology across India’s energy sector.

India showcases the potential for Vehicle-to-Grid technology adoption, yet its readiness hinges on pivotal factors. The evolving EV infrastructure lays the groundwork, but the scarcity of bi-directional chargers, essential for V2G, calls for accelerated deployment. Regulatory frameworks must align with V2G integration, outlining grid access and incentivizing participation for consumers. Strengthening the grid infrastructure becomes paramount, necessitating adaptations to manage bidirectional energy flow. Heightened public awareness about V2G benefits is essential, underlining its role in grid support and sustainability Comprehensive efforts encompassing infrastructure expansion, regulatory clarity, grid enhancements, and awareness campaigns are vital to propel India towards successful V2G integration.

    Opportunities and Challenges

As EVs spend a significant portion of their lifetime parked, their inherent battery storage capacity positions them as an attractive and flexible solution for the power system. This unique characteristic creates vast storage capacity within the EV fleets. These EVs function as flexible loads and decentralized storage resources, providing additional flexibility to support power system operations. V2G is particularly significant in solar-based systems, when synced with renewable energy sources, V2G can minimize extra load impact on the power system and leverage synergies between EVs and renewables. Smart EV charging minimizes reliance on carbon-intensive fossil fuel plants to balance renewable energy.  Implementing V2G can also reduce the need for distribution grid investments.

However, there are a few challenges that India must overcome before tapping into the V2G potential.  As the growth of EVs is set to increase in smaller vehicle segments, the amount of EVs needed to be aggregated to create a storage network is greater. A mechanism that brings together these small vehicles, or even just the batteries within them, can unlock massive potential. The other challenge is the creation of bidirectional charging stations that enable the aggregated network of batteries to work as an energy storage system. In the absence of this critical infrastructure, EVs can only receive energy and would not be able to send it back to the grid. V2G provides a solution for zero carbon emissions in energy and mobility and India must seize this opportunity to achieve the goals it has laid out for not just 2030, but beyond.

    Conclusion

V2G technology offers a transformative bridge between electric vehicles and energy grids, promising enhanced grid stability and sustainability. While India’s readiness for V2G integration shows promise, addressing infrastructure challenges and fostering regulatory alignment is pivotal for propelling this innovation toward a sustainable energy future.
