What is This Scheme About?

A solar rooftop on-grid system is a solar energy system connected to the main electrical grid. In this system highly subsidized by the government, solar panels are installed on the roof of a building to convert sunlight into electricity. Any surplus electricity generated by the solar panels is fed back into the grid using a bidirectional meter, and users are compensated for the excess power through adjustments in their power bills. Presently, Varanasi has a modest count of 664 rooftop consumers, predominantly residential (588), with a connected load totaling 27 MW, despite boasting around 3.26 lakh electricity connections and 2.25 lakh households.

The Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), will serve as the nodal agency for the project. UPNEDA has formulated a comprehensive strategy for the installation of solar rooftops in 25,000 households in Varanasi city, employing a multifaceted approach. This includes an extensive publicity campaign to raise awareness among residents, complemented by meticulous logistics and supply arrangements planning.

UPNEDA has a target of solarizing 250 homes in 100 wards of the city. Officials state that the Remote Sensing Application Centre in Lucknow will collaborate with the agency to identify houses with sufficient shadow-free roof space using geospatial technology.

In recognition of the campaign’s importance, UPNEDA will deploy 10 project officers (POs) in Varanasi for the next two months to supervise the program’s implementation, assigning one project officer for every 10 wards of the Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC).

UPNEDA has also finalized 100 solar panel vendors, 25 manufacturers, and distributors, five inverter manufacturers, and 2 net meter manufacturers who will establish their offices in Varanasi City for the installation of solar rooftops.

As a part of the Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign, bulk messaging will be sent and pamphlets will be distributed to around 3 lakh power consumers.

The workforce of 500 ‘Suryamitras’ (ITI diploma holders in solar) trained by UPNEDA will be deployed across 100 wards for customer acquisition. Additionally, radio jingles, print media advertisements, and cinema hall bytes will be utilized to ensure faster outreach.

When considering sales, the ratio of AC charger sales to DC chargers stands at 60 to 40 percent. AC chargers have a comparative advantage in terms of ease of installation due to their lower power requirements and simpler infrastructure needs. Operating at lower power levels, AC chargers use standard household electricity, making them versatile for installation in various settings, including residential areas, parking lots, and commercial spaces. Their compact design requires less space and involves simpler wiring, resulting in an easier installation process. Conversely, DC chargers present installation challenges due to their higher power requirements and larger infrastructure needs. Operating at higher power levels, they demand specialized electrical setups, often requiring higher voltage connections. Their bulkier design, necessitated by components like transformers and cooling systems, makes finding suitable installation locations challenging, especially in constrained spaces. The intricate wiring and power output complexities mandate skilled professionals for proper installation. Additionally, ensuring compatibility with diverse EV models and adhering to various standards further complicates the installation process. Despite their faster charging benefits, these complexities make DC chargers less accessible and more challenging to install compared to the simpler deployment of AC chargers. The installation cost of chargers varies based on their power capacity. Chargers with higher power capacities incur higher installation expenses. DC chargers, known for their high power capacities and infrastructure needs, tend to be more expensive to install. For example, installing a 60 kW DC charger typically costs around 15-20 Lakhs. On the other hand, AC chargers, being wall-mounted, have lower installation costs. Their installation expenses are generally 10 times cheaper compared to DC chargers, attributed to their lower power capacity and infrastructure requirements. Overall, navigating these intricacies is crucial in ensuring the successful integration of EV charging solutions and fostering the widespread adoption of electric vehicles.

Challenges and Solutions in EV Charging Infrastructure

The primary challenges for EV charging solutions providers center around addressing consumer confusion regarding AC and DC chargers. The complexities of land acquisition for EV charging stations present multifaceted challenges. Beyond the high expenses associated with procuring land, significant investments are required for building necessary infrastructure and ensuring ongoing maintenance for seamless operations. These combined costs contribute significantly to the financial considerations and complexities involved in establishing and sustaining EV charging stations.

Government incentives and policies play a pivotal role in supporting the EV charging solutions provider. Subsidies on electricity for charging make EV adoption more cost-effective for consumers. Mandates in the real estate sector requiring construction sites to integrate EV charging points for residents provide a substantial boost, fostering a more EV-friendly infrastructure and stimulating demand for charging solutions. Additionally, tax credits, rebates for EV charger installations, grants for research and development in the EV sector, and incentives encouraging public-private partnerships to expand charging networks further support the efforts of EV charging solutions providers. Policies mandating EV infrastructure integration in new construction projects or offering incentives for businesses to install charging stations collectively contribute to creating a more conducive environment for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles, facilitating the advancement in sustainable transportation.

      Conclusion

India’s dynamic EV landscape is witnessing a remarkable transformation driven by supportive government policies, substantial investments, and a surge in local manufacturing. As the world moves towards sustainable practices, India stands at the forefront, promoting solar power as a key element in its energy mix. Initiatives like the National Solar Mission and various subsidy programs have created fertile ground for entrepreneurs and businesses seeking to thrive in the solar energy sector. If you’re planning to start your solar energy business, here’s a blog on how you can kickstart and flourish in the solar energy business landscape in India.

      Understanding the Solar Business

A solar business is a business enterprise or industry related to solar energy, particularly the design, manufacturing, installation, maintenance, and distribution of solar power systems and related products. This includes solar panel manufacturing, solar installation services, solar energy project development, solar component distribution, and solar technology research and development.

Starting a Solar Business in India

      2) Register Your Business- Once you have decided what type of solar business you want to do, the next step is to register your business. You can register your business as a legal entity, such as a sole proprietorship, partnership, limited liability partnership (LLP), private limited company, or public limited company, depending on the scale and structure of your business.

      3) Location-  It is important to choose your location wisely, whether it is a manufacturing facility, office, or installation service center, keeping in mind the needs and requirements of your business.

      4) Financing – Solar Businesses often require a significant initial investment. Hence it is important to secure the necessary funding which may include personal savings, loans, grants, or investments.

      5) Market and Branding-  develop a strong brand presence and marketing strategy to promote your solar business and watch your business skyrocket.

      6) Maintaining Compliance- Lastly, ensure full compliance with regulatory requirements, certifications, and quality standards for your solar business.
